We travelled in style, on the Brittany Line ferry Pont-Aven. Our base was the family-run
Hotel-Restaurante Piedras at Piedras Blancas. High points of the trip included a
visit to the mountain sanctuary of Covadonga and a tour of the Centro Niermeyer cultural
complex at Aviles, whose innovative design was a gift from the 90-year-old architect
Oscar Niermeyer to the province of Asturias. There were two official concerts – one
at Pola de Siero and the second, shared with the male-voice fishermen’s choir Manin
de Lastres, at Colunga – but these were supplemented by an impromptu recital in a
square at Oviedo and another on the staircase of the hotel! The almost Alpine scenery
of Asturias, the robust local cuisine and the friendliness of this proud and independent
community added to the delights of the tour.
